Pomerania

September 27th, 2009

The other day my family and I went to a little farm, only a few minutes away, to check out some poms they had – over 40 of them! It was a lot of fun and they were so cute and they all wanted your attention, lol. We took one of them home with us – the little tan and white one I’m holding in the picture below. Send me an email if you’re interested in buying a pom from them. We’re building a large fence that will completely enclose my mom’s property so nobody gets in the road ever again. I can’t be there to watch them now that I’m living in my Orono apt.

Yesterday was the Common Ground Fair – fun and all natural, as usual, lol. EqualityMaine is now selling yard signs and I got one, even though we already made the giant 4’x8′ that’s now very visible on Rt.3 in Belfast (see 8/29 blog post below). I’m working with UMaine’s GLBT organization to get the vote out on campus, encouraging students to request their absentee ballot and VOTE NO on Question 1.

RIP Squeakey ~ My Little Friend and Poocademon

September 18th, 2009

“For without words, in friendship, all thoughts, all desires, all expectations are born and shared, with joy that is unacclaimed.

When you part from your friend, you grieve not;

For that which you love most in him may be clearer in his absence, as the mountain to the climber is clearer from the plain.

And let there be no purpose in friendship save the deepening of the spirit…

And in the sweetness of friendship let there be laughter, and sharing of pleasures.

For in the dew of little things the heart finds its morning and is refreshed.”

~Kahlil Gibran, The Prophet

The Summer Day, by Mary Oliver

Who made the world?
Who made the swan, and the black bear?
Who made the grasshopper?
This grasshopper, I mean –
the one who has flung herself out of the grass,
the one who is eating sugar out of my hand,
who is moving her jaws back and forth instead of up and
down –
who is gazing around with her enormous and complicated
eyes.
Now she lifts her pale forearms and thoroughly washes her
face.
Now she snaps her wings open, and floats away.
I don’t know exactly what a prayer is.
I do know how to pay attention, how to fall down
into the grass, how to kneel down in the grass,
how to be idle and blessed, how to stroll through the fields,
which is what I have been doing all day.
Tell me, what else should I have done?
Doesn’t everything die at last, and too soon?
Tell me, what is it you plan to do
with your one wild and precious life?

Flipnote Studio

August 28th, 2009

A new free program offered for the Nintendo DSi is now available for download – just visit the game store on your DSi and look for Flipnote Studio: Game Overview. It allows you to create your own animations using photos you take with one of the two DSi cameras or anything you draw with the stylus. You can then share the animations with everyone else online via the Nintendo WiFi connection, or export your creations as an animated GIF, as I’ve done below. My only complaint is that you can only use 3 colors – blue, red, and black.

PADI Open Water Certified

August 20th, 2009

For the past two weeks I’ve been working on getting my PADI Open Water Scuba Diving Certification. Today I completed the course and I’m now PADI certified! It lasts a lifetime and means I can go scuba diving as deep as 130 feet anywhere and anytime I want. My uncle has also been diving with me and got all our equipment. We’re planning on going as often as possible, and there are several dive groups across the state. If you’ve got your certification, let me know and I’ll go diving with you!

I was scuba diving with some of my family, my little sister, and her friends in our pool and we got some cool pictures and video. Click on the right to see the pics and below is the video I uploaded. I’m really exited to join the scuba diving club at UMaine this Fall. Only one more week before I move back onto campus!

WiFi Sign

August 4th, 2009

My dad wanted a clear light up WiFi sign for our gym, so I used plexiglass and 64 white LEDs to make one. Took me about 8 hours of work, but I’m really happy with the result. Head over to my Robots & Circuitry section to see more photos.
